Portuguese news site Público has reported that the President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has received a letter from an anonymous source. Inside the letter was a bullet and a request for one million euros.

The case has now been handed over to the Portuguese police. According to Portuguese media, the letter was delivered to the official residence of the President, Belém, but de Sousa was not at home at the time. Alongside the bullet was a mobile phone and a request for one million euros with a bank account written alongside it.

Speaking to the media, de Sousa downplayed the situation, saying that he had had more threats when working in television in the past than he had had as president. He stated that “anyone who walks the path I have been walking for 30 years has this happen to them dozens of times […]. It happens and I don’t attach much importance to it”.

De Sousa also explained that these types of things do occur from time to time but he has never been warned that the situation is a serious threat. He said that given that he was not present at the time, the letter had already been passed to the police before he was even aware of it.
