Statistics released by the Salvation Army have shown that the number of homeless people in the Netherlands has increased considerably over the last year.

NU.nl has reported that the Salvation Army counted 6,016 homeless people in the summer of 2022, up from 4,876 in 2021, an increase of 23%. There is a particular concern about the rise of young homeless people, with the number of those counted between the ages of 18-22 increasing by 108, a 50% rise from 2021. There is also concern that these numbers do not reveal the full extent of the problem, given that some young homeless people may not be in contact with organisations that can support them.

The charity has pointed to multiple causes for this phenomenon, stating that whilst the cost of living crisis inevitably has had an effect, it is not the only issue. They highlight in particular the lack of support received by young people who have received support or care from the social system once they turn 18.
