Restrictions to be imposed on fresh water supply after major water shortage caused by the longest drought in record
Authorities in Spain have announced a new set of measures for Catalonia after lack of rainfall has caused a major drought in the area. According to a report by Euronews, the restrictions which will be imposed from Friday, November 25, will require several municipal fountains to be turned off. The restrictions have also been imposed on washing cars and showers have been limited to only five minutes, the report adds.
Aside from this, under the new restrictions, swimming pools cannot also be refilled, and gardens can only be washed twice a week. The report also adds that private water companies have been asked to alert the authorities if any households use too much water.
“Be aware of the exceptional situation the country is facing,” said Patricia Plaja, a spokeswoman for the Catalan regional government, according to the report. She also added, “The climate context for Catalonia means that they will suffer longer and more frequent droughts.”
Plaja also said, it would not be required to limit the supply of water to households for cooking, drinking and washing.
Catalonia is the second area in Spain to impose restrictions this year. Earlier, Seville cut their water supply in September, after experiencing a long spell of extreme summer temperatures, reaching high as 47 degrees Celsius near Cordoba.
