US midterm elections look positive for Greece
Paula Nardini - Pexals

Greek newspaper eKathimerini have published an analysis of the US midterm elections in which they say that both the Greek-American community and Greek interests have been major winners in the 2022 vote.

First of all, they cite how Greek-American members of Congress who ran – Gus Bilirakis, John Sarbanis, Dina Titus, Chris Pappas, Nicole Malliotaki – were all re-elected. Likewise Chris Van Hollen was re-elected to the senate and Robert Menendez Jr. flipped his seat and will become a congressman in January.

On the other hand, the analysis also points out that it was a bad night for Turkish President Recep Tayipp Erdogan, who had been expecting a ‘red wave’ of Republican victories and had recently held talks with the party over potential sales of F16s to Turkey.

However, with the results that have emerged, it is those that have tried to curb arms sales to Turkey who have come out on top.

The results in the Congress therefore mean, according to eKathimerini’s analysis, that US-Greece and US-Cyprus bilateral relations are off to a good start looking ahead to the next Congress.
