Chinese authorities expect the number to double in the days ahead

China’s Zhejiang region, a big industrial province near Shanghai, is battling with one of the worst COVID outbreaks since the beginning of the pandemic, with over one million being reported daily.

According to a report by Reuters on Sunday, December 25, the announcement was made by the provincial government who suggest that the numbers of infected are expected to double in the coming days.

But despite such a record increase in the number of cases across the country, China has not reported any COVID related deaths in the past week, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention

An official statement by the Zhejiang government, quoted in the report said, “The infection peak is estimated to arrive earlier in Zhejiang and to enter a period of elevated level around New Year’s Day, during which the daily new infection number will be up to two million.”

China´s recent move to shift from its zero-COVID policy has caused infections to rise as citizens and experts are now demanding the government to release reliable statistics about the outbreak.

The region of Zhejiang has a population of over 65.4 million people and is among a few places in the country to estimate their recent increase in infection, including asymptomatic cases.
