Russia’s defence ministry said 63 soldiers were killed, while Ukraine claims over 400 died

Over 63 soldiers were killed after what is being termed as one of the deadliest strikes by Ukraine after an attacked in the occupied Donetsk region.

According to a report in Euronews on Tuesday, January 3, this figure was revealed in a rare disclosure by the Russian defence ministry that said “on New Year’s Eve in a fiery blast that destroyed a temporary barracks in a vocational college in Makiivka, twin city of the Russian-occupied regional capital of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine”.

Meanwhile, Ukranian authorities are claiming that the Russian death toll was much higher. They say that over 400 soldiers were injured, while another 300 were injured in the attack.

Several Russian nationalists and lawmakers have now demanded the punishment of commanders in charge. They have accused them of ignoring dangers.

A statement quoted in the report by a Russian critic said, “the soldiers were being housed alongside an ammunition dump at the site, which the Russian defence ministry said was hit by four rockets fired from US-made HIMARS launchers”.
