Authorities have said 64 migrants have died after their ship broke apart in the Calabrian coast of Italy

The bodies of several migrants have washed up on the coast of Calabria in southern Italy, after a migrant ship crashed into rocks.

According to the Guardian, officials in Italy say over 64 people have died, which includes women and children.

Victims’ bodies were found on the beaches of the tourist resort area of Steccato di Cutro, while several others were also found in the sea.

As per estimates by the authorities, there were between 120 to 200 people on board the vessel, and 80 among them have been rescued.

“The numbers are difficult to establish, we just have to wait. Maybe when the sea is calmer it might return more bodies, even after a week”, said Sergio Tedesco, commander of the local police, adding, “Some survivors say there were 120 onboard the boat; others say 200”.

Officials have also arrested a Turkish national on charges of human trafficking, as the search for more survivors continues.
