Hope to find more people alive in Syria and Turkey fades as death toll after the devastating earthquake passes 21,000
As search and rescue operations continue across parts of Turkey and Syria destroyed by the earthquake, the hope to find more people alive under the rubble is fading.
According to a report by Reuters on Thursday, February 9, the total death toll after the deadly earthquake has passed 21,000.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been reported homeless, after the quake destroyed their homes and freezing temperatures along with the lack of food and water is creating further problems.
The death toll in both Syria and Turkey has now been reported to have surpassed a similar earthquake in 1999, which resulted in the death of 17,000 people.
Many of the survivors are now living in makeshift shelters across car parking in supermarkets, mosques, one the roadside and also on many of the ruins.
As per reports, 40 percent of the building in Kahramanmaras, which was the epicenter of the earthquake in Turkey have been damaged.
Turkish government had also announced earlier that over 6,500 building across the country have been confirmed to have collapsed.
Both countries have reported a huge increase in death toll, as in Turkey, authorities have said that at least 17,406 have died, whereas in Syria over 3,300 deaths have been reported.
