LA MOJONERA
Until 1984, the town of Mojonera formed part of the Felix district. The stand-out economic activity here is the local production of confectionery, recognised in the whole region.
The main attraction of this Almerian town in the Poniente district is the parish church of the Virgin of Fuensanta, built in the 20th Century. One can also visit the reservoir of Las Cadenas.
The main arts and crafts works that are carried out in the town consist of lace making, mostly done in female societies and groups in anticipation of the annual gatherings of people in the month of June.
HOTELS
Hotels in La Mojonera are scarce and hard to find. Nearby towns and villages such as El Ejido and Roquetas Del Mar provide more than enough accommodation opportunities, including guesthouses, hostals, hotels and self-catering apartments, just a short drive away from this beautiful town.
GASTRONOMY
In terms of the gastronomy of La Mojonera, the stand-out dishes are the pasta (gurullos) with rabbit meat and the ´trigo pelado´. Obviously, the confectionary and pastries are the highlights, with delicious treats on offer such as grape-juice bread and cakes.
CELEBRATIONS
The local festivities in La Mojonera are celebrated in honour of San Pedro and the Virgin of Fátima, between the 27th and 29th of June. There is also a large presence of Muslim immigrants in the town, giving more importance and grand participation on the day of Ramadan.
Other important celebrations are the festivities organized for the day of Andalucía that take place during the 27th and 28th February, and the International Water Day, that is commemorated on the 29th March.
HOW TO GET THERE
La Mojonera is located 28 kilometres from the city of Almería, from where it´s possible to take the A-7 motorway, taking exit number 420 towards La Mojonera. Once you find yourself on the ALP-108, continue along the Cosario road which will take you to your destination.
