EU investment in Almeria’s future

THE EUROPEAN Union has allocated 15 million euros to the city of Almeria to tackle the increasing challenges of urbanisation.

The funds are part of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy that aims to develop ‘smart’ cities, promote a low carbon economy and to revitalise city centres including the protection of historical landmarks.

The grant has been matched by 3,750,000 euros of municipal funds to match the 80% funding approved from the EU.

Specific projects in Almeria include the protection of the Alcazaba, the Historic Quarter and the renovation of El Zapillo, Ciudad Jardín, El Tagarete and all the neighbourhoods on the maritime front.

The Sustainable Urban Development Strategy is applicable to cities or urban areas of more than 20,000 inhabitants to tackle the challenges faced by urban life in which two-thirds of Europeans live.
