MORE than 3,000 vehicles have been sanctioned in Almeria in the last year for not having the correct insurance.

A total of 3,212 drivers have reportedly received sanctions for insurance reasons from the Guardia Civil’s traffic division in the last year, averaging at eight vehicles a day.

The General Direction of Traffic (DGT) estimates that approximately 10 per cent of vehicles registered since 1996 drive on the roads without the correct insurance.

New technology capable of reading licence plates has been praised as the reason for the huge increase in cautions handed out as a result.

The so called ‘smart cameras’ have been added to fixed speed cameras across the province, and are capable of detecting whether a vehicle has the correct insurance.
