A COURT in Almeria has sentenced a man found guilty of attempting to escape a police checkpoint at 130 kilometres per hour to two years and three months in prison.

The Fifth Criminal Court heard the defendant was driving on Calle Salud in the La Chanca area of Almeria City when a National Police patrol tried to pull him over.

The driver ignored their requests to stop the car and instead fled, reaching speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour.

Prosecutors also claimed the driver attempted to run two police officers over in the course of the chase. The officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

They added the defendant almost crashed into a police car and that a National Police motorcycle ended up colliding into another vehicle. The motorcycle rider had to go of work for 20 days after falling off his vehicle in the crash.

The court ordered the defendant to pay out €1,200 in compensation to the motorcycle rider. He will also be required to do 60 days of community service and he is banned from driving for six years and three months.
