Antonio Guterres announces that Big Oil companies knew about the impact of fossil fuel but continued to expand production

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that Big Oil companies have been aware about the science of climate change but continued to ignore it.

Guterres made this announcement during an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, January 18.

“We learned last week that certain fossil fuel producers were fully aware in the 1970s that their core product was baking our planet”, he said.

The UN chief added that fossil fuel scientists employed by big oil companies were aware about the impact the global oil and gas industry had on the environment but continues to increase production.

“I’m not only talking about UN scientists,” Guterres said, adding “I’m talking about fossil fuel scientists”, as cited in a Euronews report.

His comments on this subject come after a study was released that revealed the American multinational oil and gas corporation Exxon had scientists who had accurately predicted climate change in the 1970s.

The debate on this study started in 2015, when as per the report, leaked internal documents revealed that the company continued to increase production despite having knowledge about its impact on the environment.
