Spanish Rugby Team Make Olympics

With all eyes on Spain’s selection and their questionable performance for the Euro 2016 football championships, which resulted in them being knocked out by Italy, most people were  completely unaware of the almost impossible feat accomplished by the Spanish men’s rugby 7 side.

The Spanish rugby 7 side took the final qualifying position for the Olympic Games being held in Brazil this year when they scored a last-minute try and beat favourites to win, Samoa, 22-19.

The start of the game looked extremely promising for the Spaniards, as they were winning 12-0 against the team that many believe is the best in the world. However, in the second half it looked as though defeat was imminent when they trailed 19-12.

Nevertheless, the team fought hard and managed to close the gap to 19-17 right until the last few seconds when a winning try was scored from a penalty, which resulted in a final score of 22-19, leaving the whole stadium stunned.

Spain will now go on to Brazil and join the other 11 nations who have secured their place in the Olympics: Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Great Britain, Argentina, USA, France, Australia, Japan and Kenya.

While the Spanish side believed they were good enough, they were still happily astounded by the result.  Player, Pedro Feijoo, couldn’t hold back the tears when he told the cameras that going to the Olympics was a dream come true.
