Suspect stabbed officers on duty before being shot by the Police

Two Belgian Police officers were attacked by a lone assailant carrying a knife stabbed them, killing one and injuring the other on Friday, November 11. The suspect who was later arrested, after being shot by the police, was identified as 22-year-old Yassine M from Brussels, according to a report published in the Associated Press.

The Belgian authorities also stated that the Yassine has been on the counter terrorism list of potential extremists and had previously served a six-year prison sentence.

“The man was on the list of OCAD, the organization that assesses the terrorism threats in Belgium,” said Eric Van Der Sypt, Federal Prosecution Magistrate in a quote from the report.

The report also states that the suspect also visited a local police station on Thursday, November 10, to express his hatred for them, but was not arrested. He is presently hospitalized and faces murder charges as well as attempt of murder within a terrorist context, the report added.

The Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also passed his condolences to the family and friends of the dead officer stating, “Our police officers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of our citizens”, adding that. “Today’s tragedy demonstrates this once again”.
