Over 1,000 people forced to leave their homes after wildfire started near Valencian region of Villanueva de Viver

A major forest fire in Spain resulted in huge rescue operation as hundreds of people were forced to evacuate their homes.

According to Reuters on Thursday, March 23, the fire started in the Valencian region of Villanueva de Viver in the afternoon.

Authorities rushed ten airplanes to put the fire out, which resulted in more than 1,000 people running to their safety from three villages.

Officials from the emergency services stated that “refuge for 600 people and a field hospital” had been set up by them.

This incident of wildfire in Spain comes after figures compiled by the European Commission’s European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) suggest that 2022 was the “worst year on record in Spain for forest fires with 493 blazes destroying 307,000 hectares (759,000 acres) of land”.
